I believe Vladimir came to Sweden in 1944, and my mother moved to Sweden in 1958. In between that time, we don't know much about his whereabouts or work. After 1958, Vladimir was working with artificial insemination in the south of Sweden. He was also very much involved in making stop-motion (childrens) movies and won several prizes for his work.

All this information is really very rewarding!
My mother is stunned and very happy! And thanks to this forum I am now in contact with several relatives and other amazingly helpful people who have enlightened my life!
Now, of course I have new energy to research my grandmother's side as well. I have discovered the address of their previous summer home in 1936-1946 (or thereabouts...):
Tartumaa, Elva linn, Palu tee 26 (registry #450104 according to kinnistusraamat.rik.ee).
Is there by any chance an (preferably online) database where I can search for previous owners of land or immovables? I thought I might be able to get some more clues that way.

I am so amazed of your story here and so happy about your success. I`m all in to genealogy by myself too and studied how important my roots are to me. keep on going!
anyway I wanted to put a link for you. maybe you can get some help from here -
http://www.rik.ee/land_register" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . on the left there is "single enquiry" - you can search there but for important information they ant some money. it`s not much though, under 1 euro for each exact search.
hehh, and..... we have a friend who lives in Palu tee 10

Birgit, thanks! It's all a lot of fun and quite amazing!
And thanks for the link. I'm afraid I haven't found out much about the Palu tee address. What a coincidence that you have friends on that street! Maybe they know the people in number 26 and can ask them if they know something about the history of the building.
Good luck with your research too!

Wow, it feels like it was ages since I first started with this, but it's only been a few months. During that time, I've found over 300 Estonian relatives, 25 ancestors and the tree is constantly growing. And even a living, previously unknown second cousin!
So, I have some problems interpreting important handwriting on a page, and I was hoping someone might be better at reading than me.
First off is this note. I assume it's a marriage date...
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1,102,50,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This one's even harder. I can't make out the name (Kai?), the town of birth, nor the father's name:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 3,922,50,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Here's a daughter, Anni, but I can't make out the rest:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 5,722,50,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These scribblings are also illegible for me:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1,380,50,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and these:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 7,380,50,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The rest I think I've been able to interpret.

If there's anyone who is good at reading scribblings, I'd be happy for some help.

please number your questions, would be easier to answer.
1. yes - seems to be marriage
marriage has been registered in Pollenhof (Polli, Karksi, Pärnu), but with confusing data - instead Hans the name is Peter (should be Hans Peters son):
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1231,217,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
besides name other data (places, wifes name, ages) matches, so there is a good reason to believe that writer has recorded name wrong.
there is one Hans Reissaar marrying 1874 in Hallist also, but that is not that men - place is wrong, wife is other name and age is much different:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1327,210,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2. Mai is born in Pollenhof (Polli, Karksi, Pärnu), 25. August 1851:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,762,220,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
died 8. May 1929, father is Peter Kiwwiland
3. born in Pornuse (tohtrimaja) [doctor's house] 12. June 1933, died 15. August 1933
4. 8. June 1875 married to Jaak Reäbus:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1112,218,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
5. T.(ochter) Tio born 1. October 1861:

Passer Urbanus, you are amazing! Not only did you manage to interpret all the scribblings, but also with references! Thanks a lot!!!
I'm sorry - of course I should have numbered the questions.

OK, so here goes the next questions:
(This is so much fun!!!)
1. I have one more which I can't read:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 5,138,58,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
2. I was also trying to browse through the birth records for Neu Bornhusen/Uue Pornuse/Kaubi. I may still not be an expert on the church book browsing, because I can only find books from 1834-1959 for that area:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/explorer.php?tid=1 ... 5075720e4c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or am I not looking in the right place?
3. On the same page as the link goes to in question 1 above
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,534,482,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, Marri Tilk's (born 24 April 1826) parents were Willelm Tilk (born what month?) and Tina. Does the same page also mean that Willelm was the brother of Jaan, Tio (who married Hendrik), Kaarl, Kadri and Tina?
4. Continuing on the same page, do I interpret it right that Willelm's parents were Pebo Joost and Marri (Tilk)?
5. If the interpretation in question 4 is correct, since there doesn't seem to be any further references to Pebo Joost and Marri, how can I research even further back? I have the same problem for other people born in the 1700-hundreds - I don't know how to trace further back...
6. Again on the same page, there is an exciting reference at
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1,176,58,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Tracing it to
page 242 I find a wife Rööt born in 1800 and a new reference to page 217:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,298,106,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . This one I can't interpret. Rööt is mentioned here, but there is someone else (Kukk Ado?) and Hans and Ann. I don't understand what this means...
7. Same problem as in question 5, I am not sure how to trace Napsi Juhhan(did I read it right?) Reisaar I back any further from here:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1030,650,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
8. What could this reference mean for Rööt born on the 18'th some unreadable month 1810? (I checked page 113 but didn't see anything which looked relevant...

)
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 4,196,76,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
9. How to interpret this?
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,590,126,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Who were Jaak and Johan, and what does the vid: No 30 mean? I think I can interpret that it says Schütz Jacob, Jaak Sohn war 1811 in No. 18 (Pebo) which is my family. Do they have anything to do with the aforementioned Jaak & Johan?
Many questions, but at the same time as I am learning a lot, I also get stuck at times and it is great to get some help!

Halliste parish has its own system of record books which is slightly different from other parishes. For some periods there are separate books for each area (estate) like Kaubi, Abja, etc., etc., as it's listed
HERE.
But the main collection of birth, death and marriage record books are listed
HERE. They contain the records of all the parish, not only those of Kaubi area.
It is quite a job to find what you're looking for in these books, I can tell you!

If you need to know on which page starts which part (birth, death, marriage, confirmation) just let me know. I have indexed some of those books for my own research (1765-1785, 1785-1807). Not a perfect index, but it helps. Note that the birth records for females from the period 1784-1804 are missing.
I'm sorry I have no time at the moment to look at your other questions, but should passer urbanus or someone else not answer to you, I'll try to do it tomorrow.

Hello Katsa!
I tried browsing the main book, but I realized quickly that an index could be quite helpful.

It seems like most of my relatives (Kütt, Tilk, Reissaar) lived in the Pebo, Napsi or Saado/Saduu farms, so I'd like to focus on those. All of these farms were located in the Neu Bornhusen/Uue Pornuse/Kaubi area.
My Estonian family first parents (top of the trees/original family forebearers/ancestors) at the moment, and whom I'm currently mostly interested in are:
Saduu Jaak Kütt was born sometime around 1727, wife An (no data).
Pebo Joost Tilk was born around 1768, and his wife Marri around 1777.
Napsi Juhhan Reissaar I was born around 1775, and his wife An around 1778.
Saduu Jaak's son Jakob Kütt's wife Els was born in 1786 (unknown where), father Hans (no data)
Pebo Joost Tilk's son Willelm was born ca October 19 1803 (so far unconfirmed). His wife was Tina Tilk, born ca 1798 (unknown where).
There's no rush of course, neither with this, nor with the other questions! These people have been unknown to my family for more than 200 years already, so a few days more won't do any harm...

But then again, I am very curious and excited about all this!

I managed to find the birth and death dates for Napsi Juhhan Reissaar I:
17 October 1775. d.10 March 1837. But still no info about parents etc.
I did find some other strange things I would like help with if someone knows what is going on...
10. What do you think happened here?
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1012,236,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Did Mats Karro I (b.20 May 1798) first marry Els (b.6 june 1776, d.16 feb? 1842), then remarried with Tina Tilk (b.29 Sep 1820, daugther of Joost Tilk)
11. What could the page reference for Mats Karro be to in the link above? It is very difficult to read...
12. This is also a strange entry, as they have omitted Napsi Juhhan Reissaar I's wife An, who is the mother of all the children (except perhaps for child V, Els born 8 Oct 1835)...
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1036,127,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ? Did he also get a second wife, Mai b.26 Aug 1810? Compare with this older entry from 1815:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... 1030,650,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
13. Again, where could these references point to?
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,253,696,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
14. Here is yet another strange entry:
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,1054,84,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It looks like Anno had a son Hendrik b.?? May 1840,d.5 ?? 1841, but no father? And there is an intelligible note.
15. What do these notes mean?
http://www.ra.ee/dgs/_purl.php?shc=EAA. ... ,140,536,0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Are they marriage dates? If so, how can Juhhan and Mai have two dates? (I can understand the death date for Hendrik, but I don't understand the other notes.)
Again, it is many questions, but I am really curious and excited that I am finding so many new leads all the time.

2 am - time for bed now I think...

I think you can find some answers to your questions when analysing these pages (it gives you a nice picture of the family structure):
Tilk family in soul revisions:
1811
Saaga EAA.1865.3.171/5:9?170,1323,1007,366,0
1816
Saaga EAA.1865.5.166:17?92,564,2277,258,0
1826
Saaga EAA.1865.3.171/12:21?227,645,2246,225,0
Reissaar family:
1811
Saaga EAA.1865.3.171/5:5?164,300,1025,173,0
1816
Saaga EAA.1865.5.166:8?86,1250,2278,255,0
1826
Saaga EAA.1865.3.171/12:12?249,422,2146,210,0
And some more answers:
1. Kert
3. Willem is born in September
4. yes, it seems to be so
6. At the page 242 one can read that Pebo Jost's son Kaarl is
Ado Schwiegersohn also - Ado's son-in-law. This goes for Hõbbe Mäggi Ado. At the page 217 there is written that Rõõt is Kuksi Ado's daughter. When putting it all together I assume that Hõbbe Mäggi Ado and Kuksi Ado is the same person. This is a perfect example how one person could have different names during his life.
8. Rõõt is born in November. The reference is onto page 143
Saaga EAA.1275.1.544:86?1155,779,975,83,0
9. Jaak Johan's son is just a young boy, who lives now at the farm No. 30
Saaga EAA.1865.5.166:18?147,764,1041,71,0. It seems, that he is mistakenly listed at the farm No. 28. He has had nothing to do with this farm in 1811.
10. yes
11. neither can I... these pages should refer to the previous church book (1815-1837), but it does not seem to work for Kaubi (I have done research on Abja and those references pointed exactly on the pages of previous book)
12. yes, Mai is the 2nd wife
14. Hendrik is most likely an illegitimate child. Anno has been penalized for child murder.
15.
verh(eiratet) - married, + - died. Juhan and Mai have been married in 1834. Juhan died 10.03.1837. Mai have remarried 1839, but you have to find out, who was her next husband.

One little question...
Katsa kirjutas:
Tilk family in soul revisions:
1811
Saaga EAA.1865.3.171/5:9?170,1323,1007,366,0
1816
Saaga EAA.1865.5.166:17?92,564,2277,258,0
1826
Saaga EAA.1865.3.171/12:21?227,645,2246,225,0
These were great links. But one thing is very confusing to me. In all the soul revisions above, they say that Willem is only 3 years older than Carl, but on this page from 1836
EAA.1275.1.548:115?64,321,390,533,0 (and also here
EAA.1275.1.544:103?63,614,938,205,0) it clearly says that he was born in 1803, i.e. he is 7 years older. That is quite a big difference even for a priest to see... And 1803 sounds reasonable since his confirmation date is set to 1821, 18 years after 1803...
Either way, isn't it strange that such a big error followed the soul revisions for so many years? I'll try to find his birth record...

in soul revisions the age is rarely right - these were done to count the people for tax and military recruiting reasons - with ages the only thing that was followed was that men's ages matches from revision to revision.
also you need to take into account that sometimes some people were not counted - probably in tax optimization reasons ...

Yes, that's right - do not take the ages in the soul revisions too seriously. They should be considered as approximate, the difference between the given age and the actual one might well be 3-5 years, sometimes even more. Also the years of death in soul revisions are in many cases not exact.

So here's finally the famous murderer every genealogist hope not to find in their family tree...

Any idea what the penalty for this would have been in Estonia in those days?
Thanks for the comments about the soul revisions ages. I've noticed that they can differ +-1 year, so this is my first encounter of such a large error as 7 years. Interesting about the tax optimization. Already in those days...
Another thing I've been pondering is that there always seem to be some woman on the "womens" side of the soul revisions, listed before the daughters, like here:

EAA.1865.5.166:8?1296,1275,1050,100,0 and here
EAA.1865.5.166:17?1306,1153,1044,80,0. I would have expected it to be the wife, but I have found that it seems like the age and/or name of those notes don't match anything at all...

Yes, these are wifes of corresponding men on the left hand side page (same row must be) - "dessen Weib" means "his wife".
What's the problem with ages? Don't say that you do not know any 42 years old men having 20 yrs wife and children from earlier marriages? Only difference is, that these times they usually did not divorce but died ... It is not rare also, that 20 years old men is marrying >40 yrs wife (in such cases you typically find the wife being widow and having a farm). I have one relative from about same time, who had 4 or 5 wifes and about 16 or more children - after one wife died when giving birth it took 10 months to have next child with next wife ...
Just in case - 1811 soul revision was counting only men (they were in hurry to count possible soldiers as war was going on) and sometimes they missed too old people and people with disabilities in that revision. Earlier revisions (1783 and 1795) do not have men and women separated to different pages - everyone comes continuously - men and women ages are marked in different columns.

Wegen Kindesmord(es) bestraft - penalized for child murder. I don't know about the penalties for child murder in 1840-ies. I have recently found out about a similar case in the end of 19th century and in this case the woman was sentenced to prison for 4 or 5 years.
THERE (
Fellinsches Ordnungsgericht) are a lot of cases of child murder, but I couldn't find this particular one with Anno Reissaar.
These women in soul revisions are wifes. Pebo Joost had wife called Mari /Marri, Marry/, Napsi Juhan's wife was Ann and Kütti Jakob's wife was Els. Mari's age 20 is certainly a b...s... as Mari died on 07.12.1825 at the age of 48
Saaga EAA.1275.2.7:264?1129,901,1051,62,0 and there is no sign about the other, younger wife Mari.

Thanks for the interesting, as always, updates!
I'm feeling that I'm, finally, getting to a point where surprises are starting to come less seldom, and I don't have to work so hard on adding new connections to the tree in Geni.com
(1) I managed to trace one relative, but I can't seem to be able to read the name (Kaster/Kaater?), or figure out the strange reference (Kousin...), of his wife here:
EAA.5357.1.72:17?283,641,468,62,0
(2) A little bit further to the right there is a
note. I assume it says "Gest(orben) ??? St Marien Dorpat"?
(3) Trying to learn something, I presume
this abbreviation (just below her name) says "surn.", meaning dead/buried?
(4) Now this is really weird. I was looking for the marriage record between Marri Reissaar (b.28.8.1856) and Jaak Reäbus. I didn't pay attention to that Passer had already found the marriage record once (
EAA.1275.1.532:113?293,943,1112,218,0), but I found another one in another church book since I'm apparently not yet an expert in which books to look in (
EAA.1275.1.532:113?293,943,1112,218,0). Why would the marriage be recorded in two separate books? I see there is a reference to a main register (haupt register), which apparently is the one Passer found.
(5) Any tips where I should start looking for any children/family/descendants for the happy couple in (4) above? I tried a name search for Reabus and Reäbus, but no luck...

How embarrassing - I forgot to look in my notes. Of course it means death. (Thanks, Katsa!)

2.
geht nach St. Marien Dorpat - goes to the St. Marien in Tartu
4. The
Hauptregister or main register is the register of engagements, proclamations and marriages. It is not the same as the (chronological) register of marriages. If the groom and the bride were from different parishes then their engagement had to be proclaimed before the congregations of both but the actual marriage usually took place at the bride's church - this was the common practice. And besides that - not every engagement ended up with marriage. The register of marriages contains all marriages which have been contracted in this church. Register of engagement etc. contains more information - which couples have been proclaimed, and the information about their ages, parents, personal status, etc.

Saaga EAA.1275.1.547:226?209,937,224,93,0 - try Räbus or Rääbus when searching.

Thank you, Mari and Katrin!!!
And thanks for the link to Rääbus. It was absolutely one of the most difficult pages I have ever tried to read!

But I guess if one tries to squeeze in 103 years of family history in one book, I'm sure it gets a bit complicated after a while.
(6) I tried to be a good researcher when I found a name and date I couldn't decipher, and tried to find the birth record of the person in question. But alas, it was in Russian so it didn't help at all. I can't figure out neither the birth date (sometime in September), nor the name (Lüfa?). Here is her birth record:
EAA.1275.1.495:31?90,387,818,414,0 and here is the entry I am trying to decipher the date from (11.9.1899?):
EAA.1275.1.547:226?322,1195,280,28,0
(7) OK, now I'm really confused (again

). I looked for birth records in another list, and found Lüfa's birth record in another book as well. Why is there a duplicate (from the entry found in (6) above)?
EAA.1275.1.558:305?370,558,1275,805,0
I found the first entry using
this page and the second one using
this page...
(8) Here's another birth date in Russian which I cannot read, for Märt Rääbus:
EAA.1275.1.488:25?30,895,844,503,0. I know it is August, but where can I read the date? Is it written in words rather than numbers?
(This is the messy page I am trying to figure out who married who, when and where etc. but I think I'll just give it a miss this time as it looks too complex to follow completely: EAA.1275.1.547:226?308,807,906,506,0. I have deciphered it like this in Geni.com...)

6. Liisa, born on Sep. 11, 1899, baptised on 26
7. The one that says Sünnimeetrika has just the birth records, Meetrikaraamat has births, deaths and marriages organised by year. I don't why it is so, but I hope that others here do!
8. Yup, numbers are written out as words, in Cyrillic to boot. Märt died 29. Aug, at 10 in the evening and buried on 13. Sep

I guess I need to start learning to read Cyrillic then, and at least the words for 1-31 and the month names.
I'm sure you mean that Märt was born on Aug 29, and baptized on Sep 13...

Hello everyone!
After finding over 400 relatives, I had an overdose of genealogy. But since then, I decided to try to become an Estonian citizen!

I received my passport two weeks ago. See what genealogy can do!
And now I've regained interest, and I just found my fourth great grandparents. But... I can't read my grandfather's name (Kadri Oia's father) in this birth record, when she is marrying Jaan Kütt. If anyone can help deciphering his name, or preferably even the whole line where also his profession is mentioned, I would be very happy:
EAA.1275.1.530:24
Neither can I see what is written after her mother's name (Rööt).
Suvised tervitades,
Bengt
